Mercury insurance really sucks! In order to get any insurance from them, I had to visit an agent (which I hadn't had to do in years), fill out a lengthy application, have photos taken of both mine and my wife's cars, provide a copy of my university diploma, etc. This took hours. But I figured it was worth it to save $800/year on our insurance. A bit old fashioned, I have to say. I'm used to buying insurance online. Well, I paid the entire 6 month premium, and everything was settled (or so I thought). Then, I wait 6 weeks and I get a call from the agent. She says that Mercury turned down my insurance due to a DUI that I had.... now get this.....23 years ago (basically when I was a kid). Is that ridiculous, or what? Then, they tell me that they won't refund my premium payment unless I provide proof that I was continuously insured prior to obtaining insurance from them! Say what? Fortunately, just to be cautious, I did not cancel my prior insurance policy with 21st Century. My advice: go with a company like 21st Century. They treat me right. Their premiums are not the absolute lowest, but they are very competitive. And they are nice and let me slide for something I did 23 years ago! (Isn't there a law that states they can only look back so far in your driving record?). Their claims process is fast and efficient. I was rear ended on the freeway one day. My car was in the body shop the very next day, with deductible waived, and coverage for a rental car. Not bad!
