Just before deploying to Afghanistan with the Army National Guard, I called GEICO and asked if they offered a discount while I was deployed. I was told yes. If I had been told no, I would have accepted it, and took it for what it was worth. However, being told yes, I asked what the conditions were. They simply asked me to give them the current milage on my motorcycle. I did as they asked ( milage under 9k ). They told me I needed to pay the full price, and when I returned to give them the mileage again (allowing approx 30 miles for someone to keep maintenance). The bike was not moved more than five miles, as a friend checked on the bike once during my deployment and drove it around the neighborhood. Needless to say, upon my demobilization, I called GEICO as it was time for my annual payment. I asked about the discount, as the bill reflected the same amount as the previous year. When I reminded them of the agreement, they told me they would adjust it, and send me a new bill. The new bill was the same. I called again, and they asked me for the milage again. Then they proceeded to tell me that "I told them prior to deployment, I had 15k miles on my bike". I suppose my neighbor rode it backwards for 7k in order to make me sound foolish, or GEICO makes this a practice. On the third attempt to correct this, GEICO all but called me a liar. Well, thank goodness for competition. I did what I should have done to begin with. USAA suggested Progressive, and after checking their rates, I got a quote for almost double the coverage, plus roadside assistance for one dollar less than my annual fees for GEICO. Lesson learned! Jerry
