I was reaching; I did say it would be an uphill battle, at the very best. In any case, it would be worth the effort to find out what caused the fire and see if there is any chance of subrogation/recovery against another party.
You are correct; if the wiring just "went bad", there is no defect or negligence per se. The only possibilities are an actual defective switch, light fixture, circuit breaker, panel, etc (I've had cases with all of these on which we have collected from manufacturers). However those are rare, even with an electrical-cause fire.

: It could have meant perfectly legal wiring that was fine at one point and simply "got old". Updates to wiring is rarely required by law until renovation or other rewiring is done -- it is all grandfathered in under the National Electric Code.
