Yes, they were correct; anything not WELL SEALED will have a smokey smell and contamination. I would go so far as to advise anything not actually canned would be suspect.

You said your agent was out; was an adjuster ever called, or are they going to have servpro do this direct? Just make sure servpro (they will know this, but it never hurts to confirm) does not dispose of anything you feel does not clean to your satisfaction before the adjuster looks at it.

The normal process is to clean everything that looks as if it will have any chance of coming clean, then replace anything that does not.

Hard surface items (ie, counters, walls, china, glass, etc. normally clean just fine unless the smoke became very hot and etched into the items. Many fabric items clean fine; thats why they always try to clean them before considering replacement.

Other claims; is the place uninhabitable during restoration? if you have additional living expense (ALE) on the policy, you are owed for any increased expenses, such as hotel or restaurant meals (food expense in EXCESS of normal, not the entire cost).

In general, ServPro is pretty good at watching things and working with you to get things back in order.

You need a new dog! I have handled several fires where the owners might have been dead, had it not been for mans best friend waking them!

: We had a fire that was limited to a couch. However, it smoldered for three hours before being enough to wake us (no thanks to the dog OR the smoke alarm!). At any rate, there is intensive smoke damage throughout the main living area. We are renting while we build and our Renter's Ins. agent has been out. He counted the big stuff and left it at that. However, the ServePro people are here cleaning and they tell me to claim any food sitting out, anything in the sooty cabinets that is not in cans and all my spices - in addition - all my make-up (bathroom was really bad - soot even in drawers).

: Are they correct in this assumption? Is there anything else my agent didn't tell me to claim that I can? We had a 2,500 deductible so every $.01 counts...

: TIA,
: Jean
