Ken, In NY state when something like this happens the doctor notifies the state of your medical problem. The state then sends you a notice giving you so many days to turn in your license. I stopped driving at the time of the seizure which was several weeks prior to having my licence suppended and have not driven since. The only way you can get your license back is if you go for a year without any more problems, which I have done. I will check our policy to see what it says about cancelation but the cleck that I spoke to took the time to ask the underwriter.
: : In August of last year I suffered what is called a "Walking Seizure". I was driving my husbands pick-up at the time and the truck suffered very minor damage, so minor that a claim was never filed. I spent 3 days in the hospital which was covered by my husbands insurance at work so again no claim was filed nor was I issued a ticket. My drivers license was suppended for a period of one year while I have been under a doctors treatment. I am happy to say that my seziures have stopped and I have been given my license back by the state after being cleared by them and the doctor.
: : I called today to get myself placed back on our insurance and was told by the Hartford Company that I had 30 days to find other insurance because they would not cover anyone who had their license suppended, no matter what. I could unnderstand if it was due to a DUI or tickets but this is rediculous and quite wrong. I am filing a complaint with the NYS insurance commissioner and anyone else I can think of. Our insurance was gotten through AARP and it is beyond me to understand why a company would insure people in my age group when they know that the older you get the more problems you have. We have NEVER filed a claim with them and have NO speeding tickets but this is how we are being treated. I will never recommend the Hartford to anyone and I will make sure that their "Policy" is spoken of often and loudly.

: When the State of NY suspended your license did you have yourself taken off the policy temporarily?
: I ask this question because I do not understand how the company found out your license had been suspened. Did the State of NY Motor Vehicle Bureau notify the company or what?
: Look at the cancellation section of your policy. Does it read that the company has the right to cancel you policy during the policy period for anything other than non-payment of premium?
: Usually an insurance company's underwriting requirements will only refuse to insure a driver whose license was suspended for traffic violations and not for a temporary health reasons.
: Something doesn't jive and it could be the clerk you have spoken with. My suggestion to you would be to first verify with a supervisor in the underwriting department of Hartford that since your suspension was due to a temporary health condition which is now cured so you and your doctor say, even since you are cured they will still not accept you again as an underwiting risk.
: Could it be that your license was suspended due to the accident and not just alone your temporary health condition?
