Most companies will "forgive" a single accident, but two in one year raises red flags with most. You may want to consider paying for this one yourself, as the lack of a bump in rates may make up for the payment.
On the other hand, did you receive a citation for the accident? If so, the insurance company will find out about the accident anyway when they run a motor vehicle record check on you at your next renewal. If that is the case, you might as well make the claim.
Ken is right, not all company underwriters are the same or treat all accidents the same way. They do all pull an MVR yearly however.
: : I switched auto insurers 8 months ago as my provider was bought out. Previously, 1 accident and no tickets. 2 months later I hit a deer and caused $9k in car damages - the new insurance company was great/paid no problems. This weekend my trailer hitch popped while towing load of firewood and the auto shop says it will be $2k to fix the same car. I have a $500 deductible but worried that another claim will prompt new insurer to cancel me or raise my rates next year. Your expert opinions are welcomed - Thanks
: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
: My humble opinion is, all insurance carriers do not carry the same cancellation underwriting requirements. Example, one underwriting department may look at your claim that hitting the deer was an unavoidable accident, and the other underwriting department may view it as you should have kept your vehicle under control at all times.
: In personal lines auto and homeowners insurance an insurance company can not cancel you out during the policy period until the anniversary renewal date or even raise your premiums with the exception of your non-payment of your premiums and/or you signing a cancellation request.
: I wouldn't do anything until your anniversary date is near and then start shopping around if you receive either a cancellation notice from the company prior to renewal time or you receive an advanced notice of a large increase in premium charges.
: Glad to be of a form of a free public service to you because I have no hidden objectives like trying to sell you information that you can find within the public information posted to the Internet. Many people even including the legal community believe that only a "Scoundrel" would sell public information that is made available free on the internet. :)
