Before choosing a health insurance company (above), make sure:
You qualify for individual (non group) health insurance (mild medical history or have been untreated for several years)
Shop around, premiums for similar health insurance policies can vary greatly from different insurers
Rules governing health insurance carriers vary from state to state, so find out if you must be offered a policy but your (former?) employer
Ask about health insurance co-payments, deductibles, and maximum out of packet expenses. Not all health plans are created equal.
If you want to keep the same doctor or specialist, make sure they're in the health insurance provider's network
If you don't qualify for individual medical coverage, you might consider participating in a group health insurance plan, professional or alumni association, chamber of commerce or your state high risk fund.
